The Boys #1 Wildstorm Universe | 32pg. | Color | $2.99 US | Mature Readers
by Sean - (a.k.a. thespectre)
"The Boys" is a comic put out by DC's Wildstorm imprint, written by Garth Ennis with art by Darrick Robertson. I've heard this book compared to Garth's "Preacher" series. The only similarity I find is Ennis' writing style. I'm a huge fan and have read all of Garth's books. This is another great read that makes me stop and think about how absurd life really is.
Since others have compared "The Boys" and "Preacher", let's look at both books. "Preacher" is about a guy who has the "Word of God" and travels with his girlfriend and a Vampire. They pretty much go around doing whatever the hell they want. "The Boys" story is much different. It's about Meta humans who are out of control. They leave a path of destruction in their wake, and should be held accountable for the damage they cause others. Good or bad, "The Boys" are a team of people who try to curb some of these witless wonders. When metas go rogue, when they hurt others, or when they make stupid mistakes - "The Boys" are there to clean up the mess. I guess they are a group of secret police for the "Supers", and dishing out punishment to super powered morons.
As usual it's typical Garth style blood and mayhem. Some of the panels actually caught me off guard, even though I'm quite used to it. I kinda like that. If this comic sells well for Wildstorm, I can almost see where Garth may take us. Contents of this book include sex, violence, dismemberment and death. Not for the young reader, an 18 or older book for sure. I think this would be a great book to add to someone's collection. A must read if you like anything like "Preacher", "Hitman", or the recent "Ghost Rider" mini. Enjoy!
Sean has been collecting off and on for 15 years, it was not untill he got married that he really found some one to share the hobby with and go all out collecting. He was a Marvel collector only but now is into all comic vendors. "I love to read and that's what's important."
